"I believe that every day gives us the opportunity to approach our difficulties in a new way."
This website is designed to tell you about me, and the ways in which I approach working with my clients. It takes courage to seek help, and I hope you'll take your time reviewing the information provided below to determine if my services fit your needs. Psychotherapy is a collaborative relationship, and selecting a therapist you're comfortable with is an important ingredient towards successful treatment and growth.
As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I assist my clients in understanding what obstacles or self-defeating patterns may be preventing them from living a more free and enriching life.
Types of Clients
Sometimes we wish we could be in a different place in life. Whether it's a broken relationship, work that isn't fulfilling, or a life event that has knocked us off balance, talking to someone can help. I treat adult clients with a range of emotional challenges, using a variety of therapeutic approaches tailored to their specific needs. Ultimately, my goal is to increase each client's self-awareness, so that they may cultivate more satisfying relationships, and navigate life transitions with more ease.
Let's face it, parenting is hard work. I help parents discover what might be triggering those moments when we say or do things that we wish we could take back. Whether it's fighting in front of kids, or promising something that can't be delivered, all parents make mistakes. By encouraging parents to pay attention to their own feelings, while holding in mind their children's needs, my goal is to facilitate heathier relationships within the family.
Children & Teens
I enjoy working with school-aged children and teens, allowing my sense of humor, wonder, and play to be present in our work. Building a trusting relationship and becoming the child/teen's ally is key to successful treatment. I help kids identify what's going on inside them which oftentimes allows them greater choices on how to respond to the world around them. Learning new problem-solving skills and effective communication strategies is a proven way to build self confidence and resiliency.
I work with clients for 50 minute sessions, typically once or twice a week. The sessions take place in a comfortable office environment, where you can discuss difficulties you're facing in life. For clients who have never felt seen, valued, or understood, this experience alone can promote healing. Active participation on your part is encouraged, and will contribute to successful treatment. Depending on your needs, therapy can be short term to address a specific problem, or longer term to address more complex issues. All sessions are confidential. Exceptions to this rule are outlined by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Psychodynamic therapy helps clients become conscious of how experiences in the past can deeply influence present interactions with self and others. By providing a non-judgmental and supportive ear, I allow clients to feel safe enough to slow down and pay attention to their thoughts and feelings. Together we explore and define self-limiting beliefs and behaviors that have formed over time. The ability to change occurs through self-awareness. My goal is for clients to expand their choices, so that they may gain access to new and more fulfilling ways of relating with others. Ultimately, the aim is to instill a sense of confidence that enables them to grow and discover their full authentic selves.
Andrea Walker, M.A. MFT
I entered this field because I know that change is possible, having personally experienced the transformative power of psychotherapy. I am fascinated by the human psyche, and our ability to continually adapt to life's challenges. If you choose to work with me as your therapist, you will find me a committed and compassionate ally.
I received my Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, at the Phillip's Graduate Institute in Chatsworth, California. During this time, I provided counseling services to children at a private elementary school. I then completed 32 months of extensive training at The Maple Counseling Center in Beverly Hills, working with a diverse range of clients. I also co-facilitated a mixed-adult process group, and treated children and parents through the Mindful Parenting Program. In my private practice, I bring all my training, as well as my life experiences, to the benefit of my clients.
